If I Programmed MIFF: The International Panorama Section

Julian considers what he would pick if he was given free reign in the biggest section at MIFF.

[With just a day until the Melbourne International Film Festival programme is revealed, Julian considers how he would fill out the festival if he was given the opportunity.]

And now we come to the big one: the International Panorama section, which contains approximately 62 feature films from around the world. A mixture of micro-budget and “arthouse” fair crossing through as many movements as possible, this curated collection offers some of the most intriguing and outstanding films, taken from the world’s top festivals and production teams.

Again, I’ve decided not to explain why every pick is in my list as it would take too long to get through. Instead, I will quickly go over which films have already been announced, and which titles I have taken from the Sydney Film Festival.

I won’t be going in-depth into any other highlights but some I do want to make mention of include: the award-winning War Witch; Robert Sarkies’ Two Little Boys starring Hamish Blake and Bret McKenzie; the shocking Compliance that is based on a true story; Juan Antonio Bayona’s tsunami feature The Impossible; Tony Kaye’s (American History X) school drama Detachment; Benoit Jacquet’s period piece Farewell, My Queen, and Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio
