Thanks to an article written by Stephen Fitzpatrick and published by The Australian two days ago, the Melbourne International Film Festival has had to announce the first non-Premiere Fund title for its 2013 festival. Joshua Oppenheimer’s Berlinale 2013 Audience Award winner The Act of Killing, one of the first 27 films to be announced for this year’s Sydney Film Festival, will be part of the Documentaries stream at MIFF this year.
It is one I’m personally looking forward to – as I mentioned in this recent podcast – with several of the culprits involved in the 1965-66 massacres in Indonesia re-enacting their murders in the style of the films they love.
While many will be dissecting the soon to be announced Cannes Film Festival lineup for MIFF selections, Melbourne audiences can now look forward to seeing The Act of Killing on the big screen, alongside Premiere Fund titles Aim High in Creation!, Galore, In Bob We Trust, My Mistress, Patrick, The Turning, and These Final Hours.
